3. We need people-powered food systems
A thriving food system is one which is made by the people, for the people – it’s not something that is defined and constructed from above and outside. In a thriving food system food is produced and consumed so that communities and the connections between people are strengthened and developed – both between urban and rural communities and within different kinds of communities.
What does people-powered mean in practice?
It means that we all claim our food citizenship – recognising that we all can take various active roles within the food system and engage in its workings in multiple ways, ranging from consumption to production to ownership and more. For many of us, this requires a change in mindset; from perceiving the food system as being something that happens someplace else, driven by someone else, out of our reach and influence, to considering the food system to be something in which we personally can and should have a say in and also take responsibility for.
